Macy Hensley is a junior at Andale High School. She started golfing when she was 14 years old, and is already competing at a state level with only two years of experience under her belt. When asking her what got her into golfing, she says, her “grandpa because he owns a golf course in Branson MO, so I always wanted to be a golfer because of him”. This year she managed to make it to state and placed 29th which would end up being good enough to make it to the second day. On the second day, Macy shot her personal best (83). This was a huge accomplishment for Macy and this score ended up getting her 21st place out of all 4A girl golfers. Since this is just her junior year, she will have another whole year to improve and get better for her senior year and hopefully keep getting new personal records.
When asking Macy what drives her to keep pushing and be the best she can be she says, “Coach Schueller, he has really pushed me to be my best and never given up on me even when I had given up on myself”. A lot of athletes give up on themselves when they face adversity, having a coach like Schueller that will keep pushing you and never give up on you is super influential and can help an athlete play better by simply boosting their confidence. Macy says the golfer that has been most influential to her has to be Scottie Scheffler, “he uses golf as a way to glorify God and doesn’t make it all about himself, which I admire”. When it comes to sports or even just life, many people forget that God has a plan for everybody and nothing happens for no reason. Even when times are tough, you just have to persevere and put your faith in God and he will guide you to success in whatever you are doing.
Another question we asked Macy is “what are some ways you get better?”, she says “the most obvious is practice, without practice there is no way you can get better. You also need to have a good group of people who help boost your confidence because golf is so mental, you have to walk in with a good head space to play good”. Again, this is where having a coach that cares and good teammates helps an athlete so much. Sports are so much more than just being athletic or fundamental, it is all about where your head is at. Anytime an athlete gets down on themselves in any sport, that’s when bad things start happening.
One of Macy’s biggest goals this year was to qualify for state. She killed that goal and then some, not only did she qualify for state, but she made it to the second day and placed 21st out of all the 4A girl golfers in Kansas. Every game day Macy likes to get up early to pray and get some putting practice in before school. Going back to the mental side of the game, this helps her get her mind right on game day. Macy says her dream course to play on would have to be “Turtle Bay Resort golf course because it is on the coast and the views are amazing”. It is truly one of the most beautiful courses you can find with the pretty views of the bay and palm trees. Macy will keep working on her game and keep improving to hopefully reach her goal of placing top 10 at state next year.
