Andale is a small town in Kansas. With a population of about 1.2k people, this town was founded in the early 1800s. The land that Andale is on was old Indian lands. Back then the government considered the land worthless. In 1860, right before the civil war many white hunters were settling upon Indian ground. Wichita was also getting started around that time. In a Wichita Beacon article it stated that Andale was as “old as the rails”. Since it was established in 1855, the same year the railroad went through the area.
There were two pioneer families who both wanted to settle on the land. They were families of J. Will Dale and George Anderson. Both of these families wanted the town named after them, but they later compromised on a combination of both of their names. These families have contributed a lot to the town, from bringing the first bank to Andale to starting the church.
Due to the chaos happening in Germany, thousands of German Catholics were coming to the US. Records show about 39,000 settled in Andale, and many of the families are still there! The city of Andale now has a population of just over 1,000 people. This town may be small, but it has great history and a lot of charm. When you think of Andale you probably think of its dominance in sports but this town can also be known for its long standing tradition.
