The Rise of KC Current: New Professional Women’s Soccer Team

Meet the brand new women’s professional soccer team, KC Current. KC Current is a new team in the National Women’s Soccer League, whose home field is located in downtown Kansas City. Sporting KC is the men’s professional soccer team, which has been around much longer than KC Current. The women’s team was created in 2020 by Brittany and Patrick Mahomes. The name of this team pays homage to Kansas City’s history and to show that they are continuously moving forward.

The Owners

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes, along with Angie and Chris Long, stared this new team, but why? The Mahomes family wanted to have Kansas City serve as a big role-model for women’s sports around the world. In an interview, Patrick stated, “I just want to give back in the best way possible and to be making history in women’s sports. I have my own daughter, to give them the platform they deserve”. It is obvious that the Mahomes family loves to support women in sports, and this team gives even more recognition to them.

To go along with supporting women’s sports, Brittany played soccer in high school and college. She went to the University of Texas at Tyler, and then went to playing internationally in Iceland. Brittany stopped playing soccer because she realized her passions were elsewhere, not in soccer. When asked questions about her soccer career in an interview, she stated, “While I was in Iceland, I realized that you have to have a huge passion if you want to play soccer and that’s what you want your career to be”.

Mascot of the Match

This team is all about giving back to the city and to women in sports. Instead of a normal mascot for their team, they have what the KC Current call the ‘Mascot of the Match’. Each game, they spotlight a different animal who are ready for adoption. These animals are mostly dogs from shelters who need a home. Many of them are starved and want to be loved. The most recent ‘Mascot of the Match’ was Millie, who was a dog who first arrived at a shelter in 2019. During the game and on KC Current’s website, you can read all about the ‘Mascot of the Match’. KC Current does this to give back to the community by helping the dogs and other animals who are in shelters.

The League and Stats

KC Current is in the National Women’s Soccer League. In this league, each team plays 26 matches, which include 13 home games along with 13 away games. As of now, KC Current is in 1st place out of 14 teams, with their record of 3-1-0. On average, a game at the CPKC Stadium costs as low as $12 to about $110. To go along with prices, costs for parking at this stadium costs around $50 per game. Compared to other professional teams in this area, it’s safe to say that KC Current’s game prices are on the cheaper side.

In order to have the #1 spot in their league right now, they have to have good stats. In their 4 games played this season, they have 46 total shots on goal. Out of all their goals scored, all of them have been in the box. On the other hand, they have 4 yellow cards but have only let 8 goals score on them. It’s clear that KC Current is next up for a very successful women’s soccer team. This team is a great way to have more representation for women’s sports as well as Kansas City.
