Frank Stoeber, a resident of Cawker City, began his ambitious project in 1953. He started at his own farm and his neighbors would notice what he was doing and bring him twine to help. With a passion for creating something extraordinary, he started rolling and wrapping twine into a ball that would eventually become a symbol of ingenuity and community pride. In 1961 it had grown so much that it was moved to town under a shelter for many people to see. Over the years, Stoeber dedicated countless hours to expanding the size of the twine ball, with locals and visitors alike contributing to its growth by adding their own pieces of twine. As word of the twine ball spread, it attracted attention from far and wide, drawing tourists and enthusiasts to witness this unique creation. The ball of twine became a focal point of Cawker City, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to marvel at its sheer size and intricate design.
Since his death the community still adds to the Ball of Twine at the annual Twine-athon held the third weekend of every August. The Largest Ball of Twine stretches over 40 feet in circumference. When Stoeber started making the ball of twine it weighed about 5,000 pounds and it now weighs 17,400 pounds.
If you stop and see the twine ball in Cawker city, Salina Kansas, you may be greeted by the caretaker, Linda Clover. She often gives people twine to add their piece to the ball.
