The Garden Plain Cheer team is more than just pom poms and uniforms. They do so much with their cheer shoes on and off. The cheer team fundraises year around, with a total of five fundraisers a year. Their fundraisers include Kroger percent of sales, 4th of July glow sticks, Mini cheer, Valentine’s Day Balloons, and Girls Night Out. These fundraisers take place not just during the season but off season too. During the season the cheer team stays busy with practices and games.
This year’s captains for the cheer team are Aubrey Kitzmann and Jewel Gallagher. Kitzmann and Gallagher both enjoy getting involved with the community, and can’t wait for this year. Kitzmann and Gallagher’s favorite fundraiser is glow sticks, because they love how they get to talk and meet new people in the community. Kitzmann said, “As cheerleaders our behavior reflects on the team and school, many girls look up to the cheerleaders and want to be like them when they’re older”. One important thing they stand by is that even when the cheer team has their cheer shoes off they are still cheerleaders. Gallagher said, ”You never know who’s watching you, so always put your best foot forward”.
The coaches for the cheer team this year are Page Arnold, and Tammy Gallagher. They both are looking forward to the new season, and are excited to watch the cheerleaders show off all the new stunts, cheers, and dances they learned this summer.
The cheer team’s most successful fundraiser is Mini Cheer. Coach Arnold said, “This past weekend at our mini cheer fundraiser we had the highest number of girls (pre-k thru 6th grade) in attendance.” They had 126 girls at the mini cheer fundraiser Sunday. She continued, “Each year I coach, the attendance has grown for mini cheer”. The impact the cheerleaders have on the community is high, and the community is the greatest supporter when it comes to fundraisers. The cheer team is very thankful to have such a supportive community.
As the season goes on, the cheer team hopes to see you cheering on all the sports in the crowds. They hope they can get the crowd more involved this year, and help boost the atmosphere on the field and courts, to show the Owls that their crowd believes in them. This week the football team is playing at Cheney. The cheer team hopes to see you there.
