In week one of 2A football the Garden Plain Owls took on the Wichita Trinity Knights. The teams agreed to play on Thursday night due to shortage of refs. The game only lasted three quarters because of the impending weather and lightning.
The Garden Plain Owls came out on top with 49 points and only allowed 14. After interviewing head coach Todd Rice, here are his thoughts on week one. “We need to improve open field tackling and staying on our feet. The confidence levels were high, and everyone was prepared and had a 95% summer attendance.” He also stated, “The young guys stood out because of our experienced players.”
Varsity running back Emrick Hays, who had an amazing game with 28 attempts, 148 yards, 3 touchdowns, and averaged 6.7 yards a carry said, “I gotta give most of the credit to the offensive line. They made the perfect gaps to run through. Also, credit to the defense for making so many stops and giving us the ball.”
With week two rolling in, KCMC sports game of the week will be the Garden Plain Owls taking on their rivals the Conway Springs Cardinals at Garden Plain on Friday, September 13. Garden Plain has beaten Conway the last 5 years. But with Conway Springs senior running back Isaac Winter, who also had an amazing week 1 with 20 attempts, 175 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns, and 8.8 yards a carry, this game will come down to the final snap.
