The Garden Plain golf team is getting ready to finish their season. They’ve had a fun year and can’t wait to take on league and regionals. On October 8th they participated in the Central Plains League tournament at Cheney, and they placed 3rd place as a team. Next Tuesday they begin their postseason run with regionals at Cheney. The team is ranked 26th in 3, 2, 1A schools, with a score of 565 points. They’ve been working hard all year, and are looking forward to seeing what the rest of this year holds.
This year’s team is made up of 6 first-year golfers. Many of the girls decided they wanted to try something new this year. They’re all enjoying it and don’t have any regrets about going out. They love seeing how they’ve improved since the beginning of the season, and are working hard every day to be better.
Junior Layla Powell said, “Golf is mainly in the mind, in other sports you can make one mistake and move on, but in golf that one mistake costs you your whole tournament”. When golfing you have to try and stay calm and not get in your head. Junior teammate Emma Nickelson said, “Trust your skills and remember you know what you’re doing.”
The coach for the Garden Plain golf team is Irv Schuller. This is his 6th year coaching both girls and boys golf. He’s been playing golf since high school, and has loved it ever since. Even though the entire team is made up of first-year golfers, Coach Schueller said, “The best part of this season has been watching the girls work hard to improve”. He’s excited to see how the rest of the season will go for them. The team’s goal is to make it to the state tournament. That means they would have to place top 3 as a team or top 5 individually. They’ve been working hard at practice on their fundamentals to help prepare.
With the season coming to an end we hope you make it out to Cheney to watch one of their upcoming tournaments. They all have had so much fun and are looking forward to next year. If you’re interested in golfing, and thinking about going out next year. The girls golf team said, “You definitely should, golf is so much fun and the atmosphere is amazing”. We’re excited to see what the rest of the year looks like for these girls.
