In the heart of Andale High School, a remarkable athlete is making waves. Gage Cooper, the school’s first and only diver, has not only broken new ground but has also made a significant impact in the sport during his freshman year. His journey to diving began with a desire to excel in flipping, an aspiration that faced obstacles when he realized college programs did not offer a path specifically for his passion. Determined to stay active in a sport, Gage turned to diving, a decision that has paid off in ways he never anticipated.
Gage’s training regimen is rigorous, comprising two-hour practice sessions that start with a 30-minute swim warm-up, followed by intensive diving drills. He understands that the road to excellence requires commitment and perseverance. “It’s a great honor to dive for Andale,” Gage reflects, “and I hope to pave the way for future athletes to pursue their sports dreams.” He is excited for the upcoming season and looks forward to further developing his skills and representing his school.
Preparing for a meet is an intricate process. Gage typically spends one to two hours warming up before he dives into competition. He introduces himself to coaches and carefully plans his dives, aiming for combinations that will yield the highest scores. Each diver takes turns showcasing their skills, with meets lasting anywhere from one to five hours, depending on the number of teams present.
One of Gage’s standout moments was scoring 79.4 points on a single dive, performing a challenging half flip with three twists. This moment not only showcased his technical ability but also his potential as a top diver in the state.
In his very first year of diving, Gage didn’t waste any time making a name for himself. He placed second at the state championship meet, a feat that solidified his position as a formidable competitor. This achievement earned him two prestigious medals: one for his state placement and another for making the All-State team.
Outside of his achievements, Gage cherishes the camaraderie and experience that comes with being part of a diving team. The state championship meet stands out as a highlight, allowing him to bond with teammates while enjoying the perks of a hotel stay and complimentary meals. An appealing break from school.
After his first season as a freshman, Gage’s dedication quickly caught the attention of coaches outside of Kansas. He was invited to a diving camp in Texas, hosted by the Longhorns, which proved to be a pivotal experience in his development. There, he honed his skills, preparing for the competitive landscape that awaits him back home.
His overall experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and he encourages others to embrace their passions: “If you have the opportunity to do a sport in high school, go for it. It doesn’t matter what sport it is—find a way to make it happen, just like I did with diving.”
Gage Cooper’s story is one of determination, passion, and trailblazing spirit. As he continues to break barriers at Andale High School, he is not just diving into competitions; he is diving into a legacy that will inspire future generations of athletes.
