The first thing I do in the morning is check my social media. I freaked out when I saw the headline that said “TikTok has been banned!” TikTok is one of my favorite apps and I watch so many interesting, cool videos. So many teenagers love to upload and make lots of videos with their friends or family. I couldn’t understand what was going on.
When I got to school I asked some of my friends what they thought about the ban. Most were as surprised as I was and couldn’t understand it. My friend, Kayla Coleman, said “I think TikTok should stay because it is one of the biggest platforms across the world to interact with everyone.” Most of my friends feel the same way and lots of other people on social media do too.
After school I was talking to my mother about TikTok. She said that she had read that because it was a Chinese owned app, people were concerned about how the information from the app was used. Most users are teenagers so I don’t understand how their information would be used unless the parents of the teenagers are the targets.
On January 17, the Supreme Court voted to ban TikTok unless it’s sold by its China – based company. They believed the risk to national security overcomes concerns of limiting speech of its 170 million users. President Trump granted TikTok a 75-day extension. He wants to see 50% American ownership.
As a teenager I think TikTok is great. Hopefully an American based company will buy it so it can remain in the United States. If not, I will have to find another social media app to interact with others. Instagram or YouTube are two apps that I could access.
