The student-run café at Garden Plain High School, “The Nest” has been in business for thirteen years. It is Garden Plain High School’s cozy spot to relax and get a quick snack or drink during the day. Inside are a variety of tables, chairs, and couches to sit down and talk to your friends while you enjoy your favorite Nest items. The Nest recently received a $12,000 donation from the Garden Plain High School Booster Club to update and revamp the interior.
Mr. Rocker’s interior design class at Garden Plain helped design and style the new layout of the space. Rockers said, “I made an assignment for my students to redesign the layout of the Nest and not to worry about the cost yet.” Senior Aubrey Mease who was in the interior design class last semester said, “We were put into groups and made a presentation for Ms. Clark about our ideas, she and one of her classes went through and picked some of their favorite parts. I focused on the benches and seating aspect of the layout but kept the same black, yellow, and grey theme the same as before.”
Clark then met with the marketing applications students, and they reviewed the options, made their choices, and created a presentation to take to the Booster Club to ask for their financial support. Clark said, “Without the support of the Booster Club, this refresh of the Nest wouldn’t have been possible. They considered our request, and they understand the value of The Nest and the learning experiences our students gain while working there. We appreciate their support, and we’ve really enjoyed the refresh process and the opportunity to work with Mr. Rocker’s class.
They purchased an entire new set of tables and chairs. They also added a new couch for the students to relax and enjoy their Nest favorites. Along with all the new furniture, they also installed a new set of pendant lights, a new TV, and a variety of decor to lighten the atmosphere of the Nest. They added an Amazon Signage System to all of the TV menus, so they can be easily programmed with menus and advertisements for Nest products. The process is almost wrapped up, and they plan to add new area rugs, vinyl window signs, wall stenciling, and replace the countertops and add new flooring on the stage area in the corner of the Nest.
The Nest offers a variety of snacks, drinks, and sweet treats for students, staff, and locals to enjoy. They offer curbside pickup, in-school delivery, and the most popular option, going inside to sit and enjoy your favorite items. Their slogan is “Socialize. Enjoy. Repeat.” The point of the Nest is to have a spot in the school for students and teachers to go and get a snack and drink to relax in between classes during passing periods.
