GPHS is full of hard-working dedicated teachers. Students look up to those teachers to help guide them in a positive way through their high school years. More than that, teachers push students to do their best and to exceed above average. One particular individual that deserves a mention is Lance Gordon. He’s been teaching at GPHS for 29 years. He teaches classes that involve using wood, metals, and technology.

Gordon grew up in the small town of Rossville in Northeast Kansas. After high school he attended two years at Kansas State University and then transferred to Fort Hays University where he earned his bachelor degree in science and education. After college he taught at Topeka West for 2 years. Gordon then moved and took a position at Garden Plain. During his teaching career at GP, he earned his master degree in technology and education through Pitt State University. 

There have been some big changes throughout his 29 years at GPHS. One change was the 2018 passage of a bond issue that allowed him to move to a bigger classroom with more materials and space. This really helped improve and support his program. Some things that were added that he appreciates are the welding booths and the new ventilation system. 

According to Gordon, with things changing each year, teaching while being supported by the administration makes life easier. Thinking back to when he taught at a much bigger school, he knew he wanted to come back to a small town like he grew up in. Garden Plain offered that small community with a good atmosphere and the never ending opportunities he was looking for. 

Gordon said, “With being a 2A school, you know the whole school by heart. Since there aren’t as many kids, it’s easier to make connections with your students.” His favorite part about teaching is the life-long connections he gets to form with his students and other staff members. 

One of the reasons why he became a teacher was because he enjoyed drawing sketches and jokingly at one time “…used to enjoy young people.” With his great sense of humor and his motivating words he pushes everyone around him to be positive and do the best they can. According to a senior Tate Vieselmeyer, Gordon is very open minded and has a great sense of humor.
