Garden Plain’s community staple, The Getaway Lounge, is nestled in the heart of downtown Garden Plain, Kansas. The Getaway Lounge offers a small-town bar and grill experience. Located at 428 N. Main St, this cozy establishment has become a local favorite, known for its welcoming environment, great food, and engaging activities.

The main street restaurant is a warm and welcoming environment and a great place for locals to stop and eat. The Getaway Lounge maintains an active presence on social media platforms, keeping the community informed about events, specials, and updates. Their Facebook page and snap chat regularly features posts about daily specials and upcoming events.

Blake Hill, owner, wanted to open the business because, “About 5 years ago, in the first 6 months of the COVID 19 pandemic, I was staying at home in KC due to the stay at home order, and I was in between jobs when I got a call from my mom that my dad broke some bones in his foot and she was having a hard time getting him around. I came back to help them out since not much was going on due to the pandemic, and stayed with them for three months working outside. During that time I had realized I needed someone close to home to help them out, so I decided to look for a job around Wichita. The previous owners of which I grew up with in GP, heard that I was looking to stay in the area and offered me to take over ownership of the Getaway Lounge. I was not looking to get into the bar and restaurant business, but it kept me close to home and a fairly flexible schedule, so I agreed to purchase The Getaway.”

With a full kitchen open seven days a week, guests can enjoy a variety of delicious meals, from classic burgers to specialty dishes. The Getaway has a large variety of food and appetizers. The menu has options of appetizers, burgers, baskets, salads, kids meals, sandwiches, wraps, Mexican “food”, dinners, and sides. One of The Getaway’s customers, Dale Haukup stated that, “The hot club wrap is my favorite thing to eat from The Getaway.” Something that makes Haukup want to go back to the getaway is, “The good service, the prices are reasonable, and there are a lot of selections on the menu.”

The cooks make sure to take their time and try to meet the customers’ satisfaction while making their meal. I talked to one of the cooks, Heather Woods. She said, “I get compliments from a lot of customers when I make their burgers.” Many customers have come back and have even brought more people with them the next visit. 

The Getaway Lounge in Garden Plain has introduced a special Lent menu. The menu consists of combo dinners, catfish dinner, grilled salmon, shrimp dinner, fish sandwich dinner, cheese quesadilla dinner, grilled cheese dinner, grilled salmon salad, fried seafood salad, salmon patty sliders, fish taco dinner, and kids fish sticks. These are all options for Lent are all at a reasonable price. 

Beyond The Getaway’s delectable food, they offer various options to enhance the guest experience. The Getaway isn’t just a place to eat and drink—it’s a gathering spot that fosters a strong sense of community.  Guests can enjoy a game of pool or unwind on the outdoor patio. Regular trivia nights, DJ bingo, karaoke sessions, and local band performances add an extra layer of excitement for guests looking for a fun night.
