I interviewed a former AHS student, Kendal Grady, who is attending Bellus Cosmetology school in Manhattan, KS. I asked her several questions that may help someone who is considering attending a Cosmetology school. I talked to Grady about some of the positives and negatives about hair school, how to get started into the career and additional details.
What do you enjoy about cosmetology school?
Kendal: I for one like the new connections that I have made and the new friends. I also like how I am going to school and learning new things in a fun, hands-on way.
What is the easiest way to get started in cosmetology?
Kendal: The easiest and best way is to show an interest in the career and then start branching out to the different programs. Make sure that you tour all the schools you are considering and analyze everything about the school, whether that’s if they have classes on Saturdays or what their hours are for class.
Is there something that you wish you would have liked to know before you started cosmetology school?
Kendal: I wish someone would have told me that I could start my career early on if I work hard and build my clientele. Being a cosmetologist is a very social career and you won’t be able to be successful if you don’t start gaining clients from the start.
What is one thing you wish was different at cosmetology school?
Kendal: I wish they updated the requirements met to a more modern trend instead of the same infection control and requirement protocols that they’ve had for years. The school system is always changing so why is hair school any different?
