The Bretthauer Empire: Cutterz Lawn Care

Shawn Bretthauer is a man of many hats. He’s a father, coaches Andale’s bowling, football, and track teams, and he’s a successful entrepreneur. Most of us know about the first couple things, but what about his business? We asked his son, Konnor Bretthauer to provide some insight into their family business, Cutterz Lawn Care. Here’s what we found out.

Shawn Bretthauer founded his business in March of 2023. Bretthauer was unhappy at his current job and he felt the best way to success was to work for yourself. Shawn already had some experience in lawn care and landscaping as he had worked for a company called Smitty’s Lawn and Landscape in Fort Dodge, Iowa, during his time in high school. He decided to start a small business on the side while he still worked his main job during the day. These were the beginnings of Cutterz Lawn Service.

The business was eventually successful enough that it allowed him to quit his day job and focus on expanding and improving. Over a year later, Bretthauer is operating his business full-time and coaching on the side. Some of Cutterz services include mowing, trimming, edging, and power blowing sidewalks, curbs, driveways and flower beds. They usually charge about $35 per lawn, but this price tends to depend on the size of the lawn, what level of care the customer wants, and obstacles that may make mowing more difficult. Cutterz stands out from other lawn care businesses in that they have grown much more quickly than others. They focus on keeping their prices affordable, and providing a wide variety of services depending on the season.

Shawn Bretthauer only employs people he trusts to use the lawn care equipment. Konnor Bretthauer and Wyatt Becker are two of those people. Konnor shared that his motivation to be working at such a young age is that it teaches him to have a good work ethic, communication skills, and allows him to earn money to pay for the things he wants. When we asked Konnor what he felt the biggest challenges of the business have been, he told us that it’s probably been the long hours and oftentimes working on the weekends or until dark. Konnor shared with us that he is currently interested in pursuing something in landscaping and lawn care when he gets older, as that’s something he’s enjoyed doing and something he feels he can make a lot of money in quickly.

The short-term business goals of Cutterz Lawn Care are to maintain their current customers’ lawns and to keep them in peak condition. Their long-term goals are to become a popular lawn care business in this area and gain lots of business and crews. Their main methods of reaching customers right now is through flyers, sponsoring local sports teams, and word-of-mouth. Shawn Bretthauer also runs a Facebook page called “Cutterz Lawn Care” to keep customers updated on current services being provided and any news involving his business.

As you can see from our interview with Konnor, him and his dad are impressive entrepreneurs. They worked together through summers and weekends to build their business into something they can be proud of. Cutterz is a team of people committed to providing affordable and quality lawn care to everyone in the area in any way they can. Thank you Konnor for

This is my first year at Renwick Review. I am a freshman at Andale High School. I am involved in girl's golf in the fall and track in the spring. I'm also in several clubs and other activities at Andale. My favorite sports team is KU. One thing I like about Renwick is the size. Since it's a small district it is easier to get to know people around school. Someone that inspires me is Kanye West because he grew up really poor but he didn't let it define his life and now he is a millionaire.
