Behind the Desk: A closer look at the life and influence of a teacher, Mrs. Daerr

Behind the Desk: A closer look at the life and influence of a teacher, Mrs. Daerr

Heather Daerr is a teacher at Garden Plain High School. Daerr teaches classes not only for Garden Plain kids but she also teaches Andale kids that don’t have the opportunity to take those classes at Andale. She grew up in Winfield, Kansas during her childhood. She went to Lowell Elementary school, then Winfield middle school then went to high school at Winfield. After graduating she decided to continue her schooling to become a teacher at Cowley College, Pittsburg State, and Wichita State University.

Mrs. Daerr teaches anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, and college biology. In those classes right now they are all learning different things. Anatomy and physiology students are learning about the digestive system and how it works. Biology is learning about heredity, disease and immunity. Chemistry is learning about bonding and reactions. Lastly, the college Biology class is working on evolution, speciation and heredity. When I asked her what a typical day of teaching looks like she said “Honestly, there are no typical days, everyday is unique.” It’s easy to say Daerr’s classes don’t do the same thing everyday she took one of her classes on a field trip.

Mrs. Daerr says her favorite thing about teaching is building relationships with all the students. She was inspired to work at Garden Plain because of the excellent community, supportive families and living within the community as well. Her favorite hobbies include gardening and thrifting.

Heather Daerr has helped the Renwick community in so many ways and she has made an impact on many students she has worked with. Make sure to thank her and appreciate the great staff we have here in the Renwick District!

I am involved in volleyball, track and field, and SADD. I like how small the community is within Renwick and especially game days. This is my first year in Renwick Review. My favorite sports team is Nebraska Volleyball. The person who inspires me is Ally Batenhorst because she is my favorite outside and she is so talented.
