Teacher Insights with Mrs. Oberley

Mrs. Oberley is a FACS teacher here at Andale High School. Oberley has been teaching for three years, all of them being here at Andale. She loves to spend time with family, cook, and sew. I am currently taking one of her classes, Culinary Essentials, and I can confidently say it is one of the most fun classes I have took at Andale. It has also taught me many things and I never realized how much I enjoy cooking until I took the class. With that being said, I was able to interview her and I got some of her great insights into being a teacher.

One of her biggest inspirations to become a teacher was her own mom, who was also a teacher. Seeing all the good work her students would go on to do inspired her a lot. Mrs. Oberley’s favorite class to teach is her advanced class, because the class is able to get a lot more done because the students are much more knowledgeable when it comes to cooking. She also said she likes the smaller class size. This is also one of her favorite things about Andale High School, the smaller classes, everyone knows each other and can work in groups together. If she had to teach one other class not related to FACS, it would be agriculture.

Although she is a great teacher, there are some things that are tough about teaching. The main one being staying passionate about what you do. Her least favorite assignment to grade is sewing samples. One assignment she is very proud of, however is grilled cheese wars, which I have not participated in yet but I am going to get to do so in the coming weeks, and it sounds like a lot of fun.

Mrs. Oberley considers herself to be a more laid back teacher, however when we are in the kitchen she becomes a lot more strict. Her grading policy for late work goes as follows, ten percent for the first week it is late and then 50 percent off the rest of the semester. Next year, Mrs. Oberley will be teaching at Bishop Carroll and plans to teach a more specialized class and will not teach sewing.  Although she will not be here next year, Mrs. Oberley has already made a huge impact at Andale and will continue to do so wherever her career taker her!

I go to Andale High School and play football as well as do track and field. This is my first year being a part of Renwick Review. One thing I love about Renwick is how many opportunities we get even as a smaller district. One person who inspires me to succeed is Tom Brady, because he would do anything as long as it meant his team would succeed. I love all sports and am a big Denver Broncos and Nuggets fan.
